October 1999

Welcome to the monthly Punch Art section of Scrapbooking.com.  My name is Jenna Beegle, known to some as Scrap Lady, and I'll be responsible for most of the ideas you'll be seeing here each month.  Each month, we'll change the theme of the punch art so there's always something new.  But don't worry - the old ideas will always be available in the archive.  If you use any of these ideas in your own books, we'd love to see your pages.  Submit them and Jennia will get them up here to share with the other scrappers.  And we'll also have other punch artists contributing their ideas.  I think this is going to be a lot of fun!

Note from Jennia Hart: Serious punch artists will want to take a look at Jenna's Way Cool Punch Machine

Remember, if you use any of these ideas, or if you have any ideas you'd like to share, send them in. We'd love to show them off.

Welcome to October and this month's Punchline! The odds are that you know someone, somewhere who loves Pokemon! These little guys are very popular, in cartoons, computer games and card games. And now, here they are in punch art!

Pikachu.jpg (20779 bytes)
Let's get started with one of the most popular - Pikachu!
(HERE WE HAVE pikachu.jpeg)

Pikachu's body is cut from a large scalloped oval - it gives me an even shape when I trim that way. His head is cut from a teapot, while his arms and ears are trimmed from small birch leaves. His feet come from small suns. I cut his tail, using Lightening Scissors, but you could do it with regular scissors. Be sure to add the details, like the red cheeks outlined in black and the brown on the tail. Also, with many of the Pokemon in lighter colors, you might want to outline the body parts with a very fine black pen - it makes them look more animated.
HERE WE HAVE poke ball.jpg

This ball is the easiest of all! Punch one red, one white and one black circle, about 1" works well, though this might be fun with a circle cutter, too! Hold all three circles together, cut across making the cut that goes below the black band. Cutting all three makes the fitting easy since everything is even. Then, cut the top of the black band from the black circle only. Layer them together in order. Then punch a 5/16" black circle and a 1/4" white circle. Draw on the small black circle on the white one and the white dots on the red top. These white rounded dots are what suggests a really round shape.
HERE WE HAVE Staryu.jpg This is one of the easiest to make. Punch a large star in brown, then a small sun in yellow. Trim the small sun so that only five points are left as shown. then add a 1/4" red circle in the center.
Goldeen1.jpg (14804 bytes)
HERE WE HAVE Starmie.jpg This is basically made the same way as the Staryu. Punch 2 stars from light purple and trim the center circle into a rough hexagon with small scissors.  HERE WE HAVE parasect.jpg Parasect's shell is cut from a large heart. Even off the semicircles at the top and cut a slit in the hear to tuck the pieces into. It makes a more three dimensional creature. His body is based on a half of a medium heart. His legs are made by punching a medium sun, cutting off rays so that you have four left, folding it in half and gluing in onto the back of the half heart. His front claws are trimmed from small birch leaves and his eyes are 1/8" circles. I drew the spots onto his back with a gold gel pen. HERE WE HAVE goldeen.jpg Goldeen is at its best with its drawn in details. The body is made from a large balloon. Her tail fin is made from 3 large birch leaves, while her back fin is another large birch leaf peeking up from behind. Her front fin is a small birch leaf. I simply cut a triangle of paper to make her horn. You can follow the patterns I drew on for color on her back - I used a Zig Pure Orange Writer and an Apricot Writer.
HERE WE HAVE gastly.jpg Gastly is a punched from a large circle. Then I cut a curved wedge out of him for his mouth and backed it with orange. I drew in fangs with a white gel pen, outlined in black. His eyes are a small heart cut in half . The detail around his eyes are drawn in with an orange gel pen. His eerie tail is made by punching large suns from blue gray vellum and trimming them.  HERE WE HAVE polywag.jpg Polywag's body is a large balloon with a 3/4" circle in white on top of it. The black spiral has to go the right direction to make Pokemon experts happy. His eyes are 1/4" black circles, with the details drawn on in white. his mouth is a mini heart. The legs are straight pieces of paper with small ovals at the end HERE WE HAVE diglett.jpg Diglett is a harmless little creature made by trimming a large bell. large suns have been trimmed to show the grass around him and the details on his face are drawn on with a black pen, a white gel pen and an opaque pen.
Dugtrio1.jpg (9887 bytes) Oddish.jpg (12175 bytes)
HERE WE HAVE dugtrio.jpg Dugtrio is made the same way as Diglett, but with three heads and happy expressions drawn on their faces.
HERE WE HAVE oddish.jpg Oddish's body is made from a large circle, with eyes from 1/8" red circles. His mouth is half of a small red oval. His head is an attractive arrangement of large birch leaves. the legs are made as they were for Polywag.  HERE WE HAVE jigglypuff.jpg Jigglypuff is so innocent looking. His body is made from a large circle. His arms and ears are small hearts cut in half. His little feet are small ovals and his eyes are layered 5/16" and 1/8" circles. His little hair curl is made from a small balloon. This is one figure that really benefits from the black outlines and little touches of white on his green eyes. His mouth is only drawn on.
Weedle1.jpg (12233 bytes) Bulbasaur1.jpg (15155 bytes)
HERE WE HAVE clefairy.jpg Clefairy's body is made from a large balloon. His legs are small ovals and his arms are cut from fat small tulips. His tail and forelock are both made by putting a spiral on top of a circle. His ears are made from small birch leaves. All face details are drawn on with black pens and a white gel writer. HERE WE HAVE weedle.jpg Weedle is made from a 1" circle and then 3 5/8" circles and then 4 1/2" circles. The smaller circles have 1/8" circles added to the, while his nose is a 1/4" circle. His tail and his horn are trimmed from small stars.
HERE WE HAVE poke ball.jpg
HER WE HAVE bulbasaur.jpg Bulbasaur's body is cut from a large heart as shown. His head is cut from a large bell. His bulb is made from small hearts and his legs are made from small eggs. I added his spots with a pen, and outlined them in black.

HERE WE HAVE ivysaur.jpg Ivysaur is made the same way as Bulbasaur, except that his back has small birch leaves and a medium tulip instead of the bulb.
