January 1999

Welcome to the new monthly Punch Art section of TSIN.  My name is Jenna Beegle, known to some as Scrap Lady, and I'll be responsible for most of the ideas you'll be seeing here each month.  Each month, we'll change the theme of the punch art so there's always something new.  But don't worry - the old ideas will always be available in TSIN's archive.  If you use any of these ideas in your own books, we'd love to see your pages.  Submit them and Jennia will get them up here to share with the other scrappers.  And we'll also have other punch artists contributing their ideas.  I think this is going to be a lot of fun!

Welcome to January's Punchline. I'd like to apologize to our regular readers, who missed the December update. Between Christmas and the owner of this site having to move, the month flew by. But I hope you enjoy these ideas to help you get through your Christmas pages. Christmas is a great season for punch art. Try some multi-color stars, or metallic stars spread across the page. Combine 2 jumbo bells with holly punches or stickers and ring in the holidays. Just look around and you'll be surprised. You don't have to have "Christmas punches" to make great looks. Remember, if you use any of these ideas, or if you have any ideas you'd like to share, send them in. We'd love to show them off.

Poinsettia: The pot for this plant is from a small bell, inverted and with the rounded top cut off. The stem is drawn in by hand and the leaves and petals are done with a mini birch leaf. I drew the yellow center in by hand, but you could also punch dots with a 1/16" punch and yellow paper. Presents: These presents are all made with a small square punch and a small bow punch. To make the ribbon on each package, I glued the square on a larger piece of complimentary paper and left gaps between the squares. You could also use a medium rectangle and small bow. Mix and match the papers and get very different looks. Wreath: I made this wreath by lightly penciling in a small circle. Then I placed mini birch leaves around the circle. The red dots are 1/8" circles. The small bow in the final touch.Be sure to layer on the birch leaves densely for the best look. Gingerbread: This gingerbread man is made from a medium bear with the ears trimmed off. Use a black pen to draw in his face and a white opaque pen for the decorations. make him as fancy as you want to. Maybe you could even use metallic gel pens for a special look.

Lights: These are the simplest and most effective border. Use them around a page, along one side or around one picture. Simply use an egg or oval punch in different colors. Draw in a cord, place your lights randomly and draw squiggles from the oval to the cord to be the connectors. You could use metallic papers here really well, especially on dark paper, or even some of the holographic papers for a very funky effect. Snowmen: These snowmen are identical except for their size. One is in jumbo size, the other in small. With the medium (1") circle that's out now, you could do that size, too. The body is 3 white circles. The arms are trimmed from brown suns in the way we did with the fall ideas for the dead tree. The hat is trimmed from a bell. The nose is 1 arm of an orange sun. Draw on other details, or use circle punches or even mini stars as buttons and eyes. Tree: This tree is so simple. It's only jumbo hearts layered in rows to make the roughly triangular tree shape. A small brown heart makes a great stem, while a star punch makes the perfect topper. I've also made this tree with stars in the same way as hearts. Tree Page Detail: This is one of my kids favorite pages. The popcorn garland is made with a small cloud punch. Between every 2 or 3 clouds are a cluster of berries made with a 1/8" circle. The ornaments are only 1/2" circles, with the top and hooks drawn in. You can make them from any color paper you want. You can also made oval shaped ornaments, star shaped ornaments or anything else you want. You're the artist - enjoy it!
