Starting a Scrapbook Clubby Yuko Neal I recently started a Scrapbooking Club at my workplace, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in Torrance, California. In the beginning, there were two scrappers, including myself, meeting once a week to work on our respective scrapbooking projects. Two months later, the group grew to 10 scrappers meeting twice a week. We decided to organize a official Honda Club for scrapbooking and prepared all the necessary paperwork for submission to Human Resources. Just four weeks ago, our proposal was approved and a generous budget was allocated to purchase scrapbooking tools and supplies. The club has grown to about 20 scrappers now and we continue to add new members each week. The main goal of the AHAL Scrapbooking Club is to encourage the preservation of family history. The most important aspect of the workshops is to provide the "time" to make progress on the participants' respective scrapbooking or other photo preservation projects. Many of the participants find this 'scrap time' during lunch most progressive, especially those with children who do not always have the time after work to make progress on their scrapbook projects. We do not limit our members to any specific album user. We welcome all scrappers using all types of scrapbooking materials including Creative Memories, Life and Times, Close To My Heart, Hallmark, Family Treasures, Webway, photo storage boxes, etc. It has proven to be a wonderful forum for idea and information exchange. I try to introduce and distribute as much information as I can during my workshops including new product info, oodles of layout ideas, scrapbooking Internet sites, scrapbook store reports, organization tips, technique handouts, etc. I collected over 3000 pages of layout ideas and handouts of scrapbooking information. At home, I organized a library of idea books and other art/craft technique books helpful to the art of scrapbooking (paper cutting, pop-ups, stenciling, greeting cards, circle cutter art, various idea books, etc.). These are made available to club members. Workshop visitors are scheduled during our Thursday sessions. Two weeks ago, a friend of mine who is a seasoned stamper graciously shared scrapbook embossing techniques. She was great. Last week, a Creative Memories consultant visited with us and conducted a **free** beginners workshop! We had a full house for this event. Next Thursday, we have another special presentation by a DOTS/Close To My Heart consultant. In addition to these special guest presenters, there are technique classes scheduled throughout the year including pocket pages, pop-up pages, slide-out pages, stamping, creative lettering, calligraphy, sticker art, border art, ABC books, etc. given by myself and other fellow scrappers. I will do a "explosion page" shop talk this Thursday. I submitted a few pop-up page layouts to a pop-up website last week. These are pages completed in our bi-weekly club workshops. They should be posted to the Internet in the coming weeks. We recently found out that Nissan and Toyota also have scrapping groups. We all have an open invitation to scrap with each other anytime. As a matter of fact, a Nissan scrapper offered to do a "quilt strips" shop talk at Honda next month. Article by Yuko Neal, President AHAL Scrapbooking Club AHAL - American Honda Activities League |
